JML engineers welcome your technical questions about the features, specifications and capabilities of our shutter systems and are always available to help you select the most cost-efficient combination of components for your particular application.
The SES 21855 shutter with a 65mm diameter aperture is now the largest JML standard shutter. This shutter includes a built-in solid state synchronization system.

Diagram
The solid state synchronization system provides a feedback signal after the shutter transfers to the open state. The system incorporates an infrared emitting diode, an infrared sensitive detecting transistor and an interrupting vane. The vane is attached to the shutter to block the light path between the emitter and detector in the closed position. When the shutter transfers to the 80% open position, the vane is removed from the infrared light path allowing the emitter to switch the detector to the active state. Support circuitry for the solid state synchronization system is built into all JML drivers.
The SES 16495 standard shutter has a 35mm diameter aperture. This shutter addresses those applications requiring a larger aperture than our 25mm shutter (SES 16500). The SES 16495 shutter includes a built-in solid-state synchronization system. When used in conjunction with one of our drivers, it allows the user to program both exposure frequency and duration.
The SES 16500 shutter, with a 25mm diameter aperture, is designed for accurate and repeatable exposures in a wide variety of applications. Activated by an electronic pulse from the drive system, the shutter can be programmed to give the precise number of exposures you need at the exact time intervals you need them. The SES 16500 is equipped with a solid state synchronization system to achieve even greater control and flexibility. Because the support circuitry for the synchronization system is built into both our drivers, you can customize your shutter/driver package to suit your specialized requirements.
The SES 16508 shutter, with a 14mm aperture, fills the gap between our 25mm and 6mm aperture shutters. This shutter has all the same features as our 25mm shutter, but is faster. The faster, smaller SES 16505 shutter, with a 6mm aperture, is a good choice for laser use or for specialized applications such as low-level chopping to 200 Hz, laser pulse gating and selecting, pulse modulation to 200 Hz, precision exposure control, holography and photography.
Like all of the previously mentioned shutters, the SES16505 is a programmable shutter activated by an electronic pulse generated by the drive system. The fastest pulse achievable with this shutter is 2.0 milliseconds. It also features built-in solid state synchronization. The smallest apertures and fastest shutters that JML offers are the 3mm and 2mm shutters (SES 21859 and SES 21860).
JML also has a line of compact shutters with apertures of 65mm, 45mm, 35mm and 25mm. These shutters come in smaller housings than their standard counterparts. JML supplies all shutters housed in black anodized aluminum cases. JML shutters feature coated blades and offer complete programmability and long mechanical life. Our driver can operate any of the shutters to their maximum repetition rate and can be used for normally open or normally closed shutter configurations. JML also offers video and microscope mounts for all shutters except the 65mm and 45mm apertures. There are adapter sets available that allow our shutters to be mounted to Zeiss, Nikon, Leica or Olympus microscopes. JML’s electronic shutters and driver offer precision, accuracy and reliability. All shutters are programmable and feature built-in solid state synchronization systems. In addition, our driver comes complete with the support circuitry for the synchronization systems. This gives you a great deal of flexibility when designing your shutter system.
All the shutters are designed to provide a number of mounting configurations. A 1/4-20T threaded post hole is provided for mounting to an optical stand. The external rear thread can be interfaced directly into your application or with one of our mounting rings. If you have any questions about these or any other JML products, please call 585-248-8907.
Typical timing values (msec) are determined using our drive equipment and are measured with shutters equipped with standard black Teflon® (“T”) coated shutter blades. Typically add 10% for the 2mm, 3mm, and 6mm devices and add 30% for all standard 14mm and the 25mm to each of the timing specifications when utilizing AlSiO or AlMgF2 coated blades. (Note: timing is the same for all blade finishes and coatings for the standard 35mm and all compact type shutters.) Typical Pulse Input To Controller

This shutter driver device complies with CE, UL, CSA standards for laboratory equipment. For externally timed control, the SDS 21861/000 is ideal. In addition to shutter control from the BNC inputs, these inputs also can be controlled via a computer serial port (RS-232C). By selecting the proper address for each unit a number of devices can be controlled from one serial port.
With key selection, the SDS 21861/000 can be operated in any one of three modes, outlined under features, depending on the application. In addition, it can be used for normally-closed and normally-open shutter configurations. Exposure control can be activated by external pulse or remote actuate cable. Reset can be accomplished by external pulse, front panel reset switch or remote actuate cable.

SDS21861/000 Front Panel
Simple and straightforward controls make the SDS21861/000 easy to use and configure. LED indicators reveal shutter status at a glance while the key switch will set the unit to a specific interrupt mode and not allow an inadvertent change in setting once the key is removed. Additional interrupt functions are available at the MODE CONTROL 7-PIN plugable connector.
The AUX output and +5VDC output also are available at the MODE CONTROL connector.
SDS21861/000 Rear Panel
All main input/output functions can be accessed at the SDS21861/000 rear panel including the (manually selectable) 115/230VAC input. Additionally, BNC connectors allow for quick termination of TTL command signals. Function switches A-F determine the active state of the BNC inputs or outputs (high or low level active). Function switch H selects HIGH/LOW energy level. Function switch G will disable the SYNC output BNC and disable the IR emitter of the synchronization circuit within the shutter. Addressable RS-232 control is also available via the 8- pin RJ45 connectors. Daisy chain additional SDS21861/000 units by connecting the RJ45 output of one controller to the RJ45 input of the next controller in the chain. The unit’s specific address in the chain is selected via the ADDRESS rotary octal switch. Shutter output is a female locking connector.

Blade Coatings – When using shutters with coherent and non-coherent light sources (such as lasers or high-power lamps used in microscopes), the power output from these sources may require the need to protect the shutters’ blade surface from the source’s damaging effects. Shutters are available with three optional blade finishes/coatings. The standard finish is black Teflon® (suffix 000) over a stainless steel substrate on both the input and output sides. Choices of AlSiO (suffix 900) and AlMgF2 (suffix 902) coatings over a BeCu substrate are also available. It is intended that the user’s light source be input to the reflective side only.* When considering a coated shutter blade over BeCu substrate, please keep in mind that the timing specifications will differ slightly from the published specifications found in the timing section of this catalog. Typically, add 10% for the 2mm, 3mm, and 6mm devices and add 30% for the standard 14mm and 25mm to the published timing specifications for shutters equipped with Teflon®coated blades. (Note: timing is the same for all blade finishes and coatings for the standard 35mm and all compact type shutters.)

*When switching a high-powered coherent or non-coherent light source with a shutter equipped with the proper coated blades for the particular
application, input to the black Teflon® side will likely cause irreparable damage to the shutter’s blades. This damage is not covered under our limited
warranty. All listed power ratings are for input to the reflective side only.
