Aspherical Lenses

An aspherical lens has a radius of curvature that varies from the center to the edge of the lens. This varying radius is difficult to make but is more useful than a simpler spherical lens.

Why use a JML asphere?

Aspheres provide performance advantages of reducing optical aberrations compared to spherical lenses, and one aspherical lens can replace multiple spherical lenses within an optical system. Optical systems that incorporate aspheres can usually be made smaller and lighter. Such benefits are often important within the medical and aerospace applications.

Because of the complexity of the surface curvature profile, the fabrication of such lens surfaces requires special machinery, advanced skill sets of the optical technician, and unique metrology for testing.

JML Optical has been designing and providing aspherical glass lenses since 1997, expanded our fabrication capabilities in 2015, and have delivered over 200,000 of these designs.

Manufacturing Our Aspheres

JML uses state-of-the art dedicated CNC machinery throughout the fabrication of our aspherical lenses. Quality control checks are performed at every step of the manufacturing process. We have the capacity and flexibility in our aspherical manufacturing to handle both rapid prototyping and volume production.

As with the fabrication of all our glass lens types, JML uses a dedicated cell for the making of our aspherical lenses. These cell teams handle the entire fabrication process, from generation, grinding, to finished polishing. During the polishing process we have the ability to incorporate deterministic polishing, which speeds up the process and minimizes fabrication iterations. In all our lean cells, the manufacturing process is designed to eliminate handoff wait times, verifies that the lens quality metrics are documented and achieved, and maximizes production yields.
